Topol to Provide Update on Genomics of CV Disease

Eric D. Topol, M.D., well known for his work in genomics, will present a State-of-the-Art Late-Breaking Lecture, “The Genomics of Cardiovascular Disease,” on Monday, March 31, at ACC.08 in Chicago (#401, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., McCormick Place, North Hall B1). Topol explained in an interview: “This will be an exciting session that delves into the latest genomic information, a field that is literally exploding with new knowledge and deemed the ‘breakthrough of the year’ by Science for 2007. First, I will review the latest data of new, compelling genomic markers for myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation and abnormal lipoproteins. The whole field of personal/consumer genomics has just been launched whereby anyone can get one million single nucleotide markers (SNPs) scanned and will be seeking advice from cardiologists on what the data mean. My lecture will be followed by a panel discussion in which we will review the progress, limitations, caveats and future issues in cardiovascular genomic medicine.”.

FITs Will Find Many Resources at ACC.08, SCAI-ACCi2

Fellows in training (FITs) will have no shortage of opportunities to learn and network at both ACC.08 and SCAI-ACCi2 this year. In addition to regular sessions, both meetings feature Fellows Bootcamps. The SCAI-ACCi2 Fellows Bootcamp is for third-year fellows who are entering an interventional fellowship in 2008. The program, which runs Monday, 1 to 5 p.m., and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at McCormick Place, Room S106, includes arterial access, wires and balloons, PCI pharmacology, FFR and IVUS, case-based demonstrations and case reviews.

The ACC.08 Fellows Imaging Bootcamp 2008 takes place on Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., McCormick Place, Room N426 B/C. The program includes the nuts and bolts of cardiac computed tomography, what you need to know about cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear cardiology and the reliable echocardiogram. Also part of the program is “Three-Course Imaging Lunch: Your Potential Careers, Reimbursement and the Future of Imaging.”

FITs will also have multiple opportunities to find out more about career options, receive career guidance and network. Don’t forget also, the FIT Community Room/Lounge, E257, McCormick Place, opens Sunday through Tuesday. To find out more details about FIT programs, click here.

SCAI Annual Banquet: a Perfect ‘Night at the Museum’

The Museum of Science and Industry is one of the most popular destinations in Chicago. What better place to hold the 2008 SCAI Annual Banquet? The banquet, which takes place Sunday, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., will feature dinner, an awards ceremony, and the welcoming of new Fellows, including distribution of membership certificates. The museum will be open throughout the banquet. Well worth a tour, it is a special place renowned for both delighting the senses and sparking the imagination. Built as the Palace of Fine Arts for 1893 World Columbian Exposition, the Beaux-Arts building is graced by a soaring rotunda and boasts three floors of exhibits — including a walk-through 16-foot-tall model heart. Transportation will be available by bus, with pickup points at McCormick Place and select hotels (to be announced). The cost is $50 per person. Tickets can be purchased at www.scai.org or onsite at the banquet kiosk between Rooms S100 and S101.
